Natalia Volchkova, CEFIR Policy Dirctor / NES Professor, has been appointed a Member of the ommittee for the Development Policy at the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). She will start her work on January 1, 2019.

The Committee for Development Policy (CDP) is a subsidiary advisory body of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The 24 members are nominated in their personal capacity by the Secretary-General, and are appointed by ECOSOC for a period of three years. Membership is geared to reflect a wide range of development experience as well as geographical and gender balance.

The CDP meets once a year and subsequently submits its report to ECOSOC.

Areas of Work:

The CDP advises ECOSOC on a wide range of emerging economic, social and environmental issues that are relevant for the design and implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda and for the strengthening of the international development co-operation. A few examples of recent CDP work include:
  • Global governance and rules for the post-2015 era;
  • Promoting productive capacity for sustainable development;
  • Strengthening international support measures for LDCs;
  • Achieving sustainable development in an age of climate change.
Additionally, every three years the CDP reviews the least developed country (LDC) category and advises ECOSOC and the GA which countries should be included to or graduated from the list. In its review of the category, the CDP uses indicators that are relevant, robust and available for all countries while maintaining the stability of the criteria and ensuring equitable treatment among countries over time.

The CDP also monitors countries that are graduating or have graduated from the LDC list and alerts ECOSOC of any sign of deterioration of their development progress.
